Confirm and Prevent Accidental Line Shutdowns

Owners and operators understand the importance of having valve systems and shutdown processes in place to ensure pipelines meet regulations and mitigate damage from leaks or ruptures. In the event of a pipeline rupture, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined most of the damage occurs within the first 30 seconds. While neither remote control valves (RCVs) nor automatic shutoff valves (ASVs) will prevent this initial damage, they are increasingly used to limit the release of natural gas after a line rupture event especially in High Consequence Areas (HCAs) and are faster and more cost efficient than a manual shutdown.

RCVs require an operator to initiate closure, which can lead to long decision times when there is a pipeline rupture and the operator is dealing with many simultaneous alarms while assessing the situation. ASVs on the other hand do not allow for operator intervention, which can lead to costly inadvertent shutdowns. Each system has its disadvantages, which is why SKW Enterprise Solutions designed an RCV control system that integrates the features and benefits of both solutions. This approach gives potential line-break alarming and shutoff action while giving the operator a chance to confirm and prevent an inadvertent line shutdown.

With Enterprise Solutions’ RCV, the operator will be warned by our advanced multiple correlated algorithms when a probable line rupture is detected. The operator can then choose to use the RCV to shut off the pipeline. If enabled, the RCV is also equipped to automatically shut the valve after a three-minute operator intervention period when alarms signal a rupture. This approach combines the advantages of both the RCV and the ASV.
